To End Procrastination, Do One Thing
By Kathy Gates
To end procrastination, do one thing: Tell The Truth.
You (and me too!) procrastinate for a lot of different reasons.
1. A particular task might just not enter your interest zone, and therefore you haven’t put any effort in learning how to do it well. 2. A job or chore may seem overwhelming, and your imagination convinces you that it will take light-years to get a handle on it. 3. Maybe you really want to do a job well, but you just don’t have the tools and the know-how to do it. 4. Maybe you think it’s somebody else’s job and it’s unfair for you to have to do it. 5. It could even be as simple as that you let the Child in you take over and run your Adult life.
There are as many reasons for procrastination as there are people.
But the point of this particular discourse is this: It doesn’t matter what the reason is. There’s no “right vs. wrong” here.
Just tell the truth about what is stopping you. You are truly the only one who knows what the resistance is.
And maybe it’s not an answer that you’re very proud of (like you’re a bit of a slob and it really doesn’t bother you even though you think it should). Or maybe you rely on your “procrastination label” to give you what you think is a viable excuse for not choosing to do your best at life.
Or maybe it goes against everything you’ve ever been taught (like you don’t think you’re supposed to want to start your own business).
I repeat -- it doesn’t matter what the reason is. It just matters that you clearly, wholeheartedly, honestly identify it.
Only then can you start on taking responsibility -- not blame! -- for how it’s holding you back and -- equally important! -- how it affects others you care about.
And it does affect not only you, but those in your world, those you care about.
Are you ready to end procrastination in your life once and for all? Then simply Tell The Truth. Be comfortable with your decisions, your attitude, your actions. Then you won’t have to defend them.
You don’t have to share your answer. You don’t have to announce it to your spouse, or your mother-in-law, or your boss.
Just be honest with yourself about why you resist certain things, why you hold yourself back, why you fight against yourself, why you don’t do what you say you want to do.
Just Tell The Truth. Brutally Honest. Only then will you be ready to tackle it, quit hiding behind it, and use it to help you become what you want to be. . ============================ Kathy Gates is a Professional Life Coach in Scottsdale AZ.
